MacBook Pro 15″2012
AppleCare is the best tech support ever! When I went to university in 2007, my parents bought me a MacBook Pro. It was slightly cheaper than normal thanks to an educational discount at the campus bookstore, and they also insisted that I get a 3 year warranty. That is the best advice I’ve ever been given.
That first laptop needed to go in for repairs 7 times over its life span of 3 years. The motherboard was replaced, top case, battery, display (though it wasn’t cracked)… many different problems came up. None of them were intentional damage, I promise! I do use my laptop all day every day though.
2 months before the warranty expired in 2010, I took it in for another repair, and asked the Genius Bar staff in Manchester if they’d consider making an exception in this case, due to the significant repair history. They told me to wait, so I went off for dinner. Halfway through, they phoned me. “Would you like a matte screen or glossy?” Suddenly I had double the RAM to 2GB, double the hard drive space to 320GB, and a brand-new unibody MacBook Pro!
Fast-forward 2 more years to 2012, and the same type of problem happened again. This time I only had 6 repairs from different stores, in Canada, New Zealand, South Korea, Switzerland – all over the world. I still had 6 months left before the warranty was expiring, but I was leaving the UK again shortly after. Sure enough, Apple was willing to replace my computer again! Now I have 4GB of RAM and 500GB of hard drive space.
So for the cost of 2 warranties, I’ve had 2 laptop upgrades from Apple. By contrast, my previous iBook G3 dual USB from 2001 lasted very well until 2007 without a problem. The AppleCare Extended warranty is still worth buying, even though most Macs are very reliable!
